Sergiu Celibidache - The Triumphant Return

09.03.2018 | 01:50

After almost 38 years, Sergiu Celibidache was back on the podium of the Berliner Philharmoniker, rehearsing Bruckner's Seventh Symphony. From 1946 to Wilhelm Furtwängler's return in 1952, Celibidache was the orchestra's principal conductor. His last concert was in November 1954: Increasingly acrimonious arguments had led to the final break with the orchestra. After 414 concerts their close and successful partnership came to an abrupt end - just one day before Furtwängler's death. Then Herbert von Karajan was elected new chief conductor. No one thought that Celibidache would ever return. But a benefit concert organized by the President of Germany in aid of Romanian orphanages brought Celibidache and the orchestra together again.
