From the Vienna State Opera: "La Fanciulla del West" (The Girl of the Golden West) by Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924). Conductor: Franz Welser-Möst - Stage director: Marco Arturo Marelli. With Nina Stemme (Minnie), Jonas Kaufmann (Dick Johnson), Tomasz Konieczny (Jack Rance). "A gem to be treasured" (The Opera Critic). California during the gold rush. After a working day the miners visit Minnie's "Polka" saloon. One day a stranger enters. He pretends to be Dick Johnson, but Minnie recognizes him as the bandit Ramerrez. When Johnson/Ramerrez is wounded, she takes him to her cabin and plays poker with the sheriff for his life. Johnson's true identity is discovered; he is to be hanged. In the last second Minnie achieves his release. Minnie and Johnson leave California to start a new life together. Puccini's opera is - as "Madama Butterfly" - based on a play of the American author David Belasco. In the triumphant premiere 1910 in New York Enrico Caruso sang the role of Johnson.
